ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: STATIC
We caught up with Static ahead of their appearance at Clyde Chorus on Friday 30th May at SWG3 Warehouse...
For any new fans, can you tell us a bit more about Static?
We’re a five-piece band from Falkirk. Most of us met at school as we were in the same circle of friends—except Bally, who joined the mix after we met him at a house party and bonded over music, gigs, and wanting to be a part of it all. We clicked straight away and have been best pals ever since. Alicia joined in 2021, after being a big supporter of the band in its early days. She’d always wanted to be on stage and brought a whole new dynamic to the group when she came on board, mainly bringing down testosterone levels a touch.
In the beginning, it was all about getting involved—playing local shows, covering songs we loved, and not falling off the stage or forgetting the second verse. But as we started writing our own music, we realised how much we valued the feeling of creating something together.
Our sound is hard to pin down because we all come from different musical backgrounds. There are elements of indie rock, grunge, pop, punk, and even funk or soul in there—depending on the mood and what we’ve been listening to that week. But the through-line is energy, emotion, and a sense of fun - we never take ourselves too seriously. That playfulness is a big part of who we are, both on and off stage.
We can't wait to see you play at Clyde Chorus this month – what can fans expect from the show?
If you’ve never seen us live, expect a full-on, fast-paced half hour packed with our original music. We pride ourselves on creating a high-energy experience where the audience doesn’t just watch the show—they can feel part of it.
Our shows have been described as intense, captivating and unique. You’ll hear driving guitar riffs, hard-hitting drums, and vocals that shift between raw and melodic depending on the moment.
We’re all best mates, and you can feel that when we perform—it’s like we’re throwing a party and inviting the audience to join us. There’s always laughter, sweat, questionable dance moves and inside jokes (like Michael’s glasses falling off mid-song, which genuinely happens almost every gig). We also have some handmade merch so you can leave with a little piece of the night and join the Static club.
What’s the best gig you’ve played to date?
It’s tough to pick just one, because different gigs have stood out for different reasons, but a few definitely rise to the top. One of our most memorable shows was at Slouch in Glasgow a couple of years ago. The venue was small but packed, and the crowd’s energy was incredible. Hearing people sing our lyrics back to us was a surreal moment, and it wasn’t just our mums.
Closer to home, we used to love playing at Rialto in Falkirk. It was more of a regular spot, full of familiar faces and a kind of hometown warmth. Michael even used to work the bar in between sets. Sadly, Rialto closed (RIP), and since then, there haven’t been many local venues to fill that gap, but it’ll always hold a special place in our story.
We also had a great time playing at Houseguest Festival last year. Being part of a lineup with so many talented bands felt like being invited to a big Glasgow family gathering. Since we’re based in Falkirk, we don’t always get to hang out with the wider Glasgow scene, so it was refreshing and inspiring to be surrounded by that kind of creative energy.
And honestly, getting heckled at one of our earlier gigs at The Mash House still cracks us up.
Are there any artists that inspire your music/songwriting? Who and why?
We’ve got a pretty eclectic mix of influences, which you can definitely hear in our music. Our individual tastes range from country and funk/soul, pop, punk, and all kinds of rock. That blend of styles shapes the way we write and perform—it’s part of why our songs don’t all sound the same.
Lyrically, a lot of our inspiration comes from powerful female voices. Women like Lady Gaga, Missy Dabice, Amy Taylor, Debbie Harry and Courtney Love have had a big impact, especially in how they use lyrics to express emotion in a raw, unapologetic way. That’s something we try to channel in our own songwriting—crafting words that resonate and stick with people, along with the occasional witty double entendre.
Instrumentally, we lean more toward the rocky, grungey side. Bands like Smashing Pumpkins have influenced our guitar tones and overall vibe, especially when we’re chasing that perfect balance between melody and grit.
More locally, we again owe a lot to the Glasgow music scene. Bands like The Dunts, The Lapelles, Pleasure Heads, and Dead Pony were huge for us as we were finding our feet. That scene gave us something to aspire to, and it’s still a huge part of our identity.
Do you have a dream venue you’ve always wanted to play?
If we’re going full dream mode, we’d say the Sphere in Las Vegas—imagine blasting our tunes across that big daft LED dome.
But more realistically, there are some iconic venues much closer to home that we’ve always dreamed of playing. Barrowland Ballroom and St Luke’s are top of the list. We’ve spent so many nights in the crowds and it’s impossible not to picture ourselves on those stages.
We’ve also always said we’d love to play SXSW. It’s one of those festivals that feels like a rite of passage and a huge chance to connect with people from all over the world.
And in all seriousness, someone needs to put us on the Fortnite main stage.
How is the rest of 2025 looking for you? Any exciting plans you can tell us about?
2025 is shaping up to be a year of new music, and hopefully, lots more live shows. As we speak, we’re in the studio recording some tracks we’re really proud of, and we’ve got even more waiting in the wings for the right moment. Some of these you may have already heard live, some are still top-secret (unfinished). We can’t say much more but definitely keep an eye out for us.
Of course, one of the things we’re most excited about is headlining Clyde Chorus Festival. We’ll be playing SWG3 Warehouse on Friday 30th May, and it’s going to be a big night for us—a celebration of everything we’ve been building, a chance to share it with new faces, and maybe even matching outfits for once.
Outside of that, our gig calendar is still filling up. It’s a bit quiet for now, but we’re always hunting for new opportunities to play. Performing live is where we thrive—it’s our favourite thing to do as a band. So anyone looking to put on a gig, we will play anywhere with a plug socket and someone willing to listen – even reluctantly.
We’ve grown so much over the past few years, both in how we sound and how we perform, and are always looking to improve – so 2025 is just the next chapter in that journey. Whether you’ve been with us since day one or you’re just discovering us now, buckle up and come along for the ride!
